The lion's den refers to one of the most famous stories in the Bible: Daniel in the lion’s den, found in Daniel chapter 6 in the Old Testament.

This account is set during the Persian Empire (after the Babylonian captivity of the Jews). Daniel, a faithful Jewish exile, had risen to a high position under King Darius the Mede because of his wisdom, integrity, and administrative skill.

The Story Summary

Jealous officials plotted against Daniel because they couldn't find fault in his work or character—except his devotion to God. They tricked King Darius into signing an irrevocable decree: For 30 days, no one could pray to any god or man except the king himself. Anyone who disobeyed would be thrown into a den of lions (a pit used for execution, where hungry lions were kept).

Daniel knew about the law but refused to stop praying to God. He continued his custom of praying three times a day toward Jerusalem with his windows open.

The conspirators caught him praying, reported him, and the king—despite liking Daniel and regretting the law—had to enforce it. Daniel was thrown into the lions' den at sunset. A stone was rolled over the entrance and sealed with the king's signet ring.

The king spent a sleepless night fasting and worrying. At dawn, he rushed to the den and called out anxiously: "Daniel, servant of the living God, has your God, whom you serve continually, been able to rescue you from the lions?"

Daniel replied calmly: "O king, live forever! My God sent His angel and shut the lions' mouths, so that they have not hurt me, because I was found blameless before Him; and also, O king, I have done no wrong before you." (Daniel 6:21–22, NKJV paraphrase)

Daniel was lifted out unharmed—no wound on him, because he trusted in God. The king then had the accusers (and their families) thrown into the den, where the lions immediately overpowered and killed them.

King Darius issued a decree praising Daniel's God as the living God whose kingdom endures forever, commanding all people to fear and tremble before Him.
