I am under Satan\u003cstrong\u003e’\u003c\/strong\u003es control. Satan is the father of this ugly seed. Now he is my master. What can I do? I am torn. Part of me likes it; part of me doesn\u003cstrong\u003e’\u003c\/strong\u003et. I can\u003cstrong\u003e’\u003c\/strong\u003et control myself and my desires. Satan tells me I am free. He tells me about an exciting life just ahead. He says don\u003cstrong\u003e’\u003c\/strong\u003et worry; have fun! Sometimes I believe him, but late at night when I am all alone, I know better. Unless I change, I fear I am headed for destruction.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eJesus is calling me. I pray to Him. Others pray for me. I confess my sins until I am weary. I try every way I can think of, but I can\u003cstrong\u003e’\u003c\/strong\u003et change myself. My heart is sinful. I\u003cstrong\u003e’\u003c\/strong\u003em on the road to hell.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003ch2\u003eI\u003cstrong\u003e’\u003c\/strong\u003em at the End of My Rope\u003c\/h2\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eI’m at the end of my rope. Swinging, swaying, clinging, praying—I admit I am helpless. I need forgiveness. I ask God to forgive my sins. In my total helplessness, I let go and fall into the loving Savior’s arms. “Jesus, I give You my sinful heart, my efforts to reform, my past, my future.” Immediately He is there. What a sweet and tender presence! I can feel his gentle, nail-scarred hands as He washes my sinful heart clean. I am forgiven. No more fears or shadows. The warm sun shines on me as it did when I was a child. Now I am a happy child of God. Satan no longer has control over me. This kind Jesus who stands beside me is now in control of my life. I enter into the joy of salvation. What a beautiful, peaceful walk. “If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness” (1 John 1:9).\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003ch2\u003eBut What Is This?\u003c\/h2\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eOh, wretched me! I have sinned again. I still have the seed of sin in me. But there is a way. The quiet voice of Jesus tells me how to deal with sin. I remember what Satan used to tell me when I was caught in the trap of sin. He told me that I was a failure. How could I do such a thing? There is no hope for me now! I have sinned again. What can I do? I can try to reform, but that doesn’t work. I can excuse myself—it was because of my parents, my job, my nature, or another person. These thoughts are a delight to Satan. He wants to keep me from the remedy. Jesus is my only hope. He says, “Come!”\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003ch2\u003eThe Walk of Faith\u003c\/h2\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eSo I come to Him. I admit I have sinned. I make no excuses. I do not try to make myself look better than I am. I tell him I have sinned. I plead for his forgiveness. I stand helpless before Him. I cannot wash myself. He gladly forgives and washes me. By faith, I know I am a child of God. I know his promises are true. In my heart, I accept that I am forgiven. This is the walk of faith. When I realize this, I praise God from a grateful heart. I was helpless. He set me free. Praise God!\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eI need to remember that Jesus died on the cross to pay for my sin. He delights in my need of Him. When I stay near to Jesus, Satan loses his power over me. Jesus promises, “My grace is sufficient for thee: for my strength is made perfect in weakness” (2 Corinthians 12:9).\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eA life of faith gives me power to overcome the seed of sin. I thank God for his mercy and grace. I pray to Him and listen for his quiet voice. I find comfort and instruction in reading his Word, the Bible. I obey Him because I love Him. As I am obedient and faithful, Christian life is rewarding and fulfilling. He had attained fame and fortune but had no peace of mind.\u003c\/em\u003e\u003c\/li\u003e\n\u003cli align=\"justify\"\u003e\u003cem\u003eShe lay motionless, pain etching furrows across her brow. It had started years ago with a loss of feeling in her toes, then her fingers. Now her arms and legs were useless, and communication was down to a whisper. She lived under a heavy cloak of depression. What purpose was there in living? Oh, for someone to understand and care!\u003c\/em\u003e\u003c\/li\u003e\n\u003c\/ul\u003e\n\u003cp align=\"justify\"\u003eThese and many other situations befall humans of every nationality and culture. Many people, young and old, face health issues that have no cure. Terminal illness claims the lives of many every year. The lack of food, water, clothing, and adequate housing are very real circumstances that trouble millions of people.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp align=\"justify\"\u003eMany people have rejected God to pursue earthly relationships and tangible goals. This leaves the body and soul restless and empty. Often people blame God for their troubles. Broken dreams, failed marriages, financial ruin, abuse, rejection, drugs, and alcohol contribute to the depression and suicide in the world today.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp align=\"justify\"\u003eIn the beginning God created a perfect world. He enjoyed a close relationship with Adam and Eve, the first people of his creation. Satan, the enemy of God, soon came into the Garden of Eden and tempted them to disobey God. Because of disobedience, their fellowship with God was broken. Satan is the cause of sin and unrighteousness. Jesus said of him, “The thief cometh not, but for to steal, and to kill, and to destroy” (John 10:10). You and I are the objects of Satan’s wrath, and he wants to destroy our body and soul in hell.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp align=\"justify\"\u003eJesus is the answer! He is our hope! He took our sins upon Himself, dying on the cross of Calvary so that our relationship with God could be restored. This renewed relationship with God will give us hope. Jesus said, “I am come that they might have life, and that they might have it more abundantly. I am the good shepherd: the good shepherd giveth his life for the sheep” (John 10:10-11). Jesus invites all people, “Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest” (Matthew 11:28).\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp align=\"justify\"\u003eJesus wants us to believe in Him. As we repent and confess our sin, God hears our prayers. He forgives us and adopts us into his family. God blesses his children with the abiding presence of the Holy Spirit. “For God hath not given us the spirit of fear; but of power, and of love, and of a sound mind” (2 Timothy 1:7).\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eGod’s forgiveness sets us free. Trusting God brings peace to our heart and mind. Life takes on a new meaning and purpose. Whatever our situation in life, we have hope! The Bible says it is like a shadow (1 Chronicles 29:15); as short-lived as plants and flowers (1 Peter 1:24); and as fleeting as a vapor (James 4:14).\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eWhile we are young we see life extending for years. As we get older, time seems to speed up. We can’t accomplish what we had hoped for earlier. We are disappointed by a variety of hindrances that restrict our lifestyle.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003ch2\u003eWhat Is the Problem?\u003c\/h2\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eWhat contributes to the discontent inside us?\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eLife is an opportunity but also a responsibility. We are unhappy whenever we go against the good we know we should do. Sin against our fellow man brings about uneasiness and guilt. Sin against ourselves has its destructive effects on our peace of mind. We feel responsible for our deeds.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eMost people have a feeling that life is part of a bigger picture than their few short years on earth. For many this means they need to recognize a higher spiritual power, a greater purpose at work in the universe. They may not always know who or what that is.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eOften people are dissatisfied with life because they fail to see it from God’s perspective. They are ignorant of God’s will and purpose for man, sometimes willingly so. Many fail to envision the eternal bliss of the faithful and would rather ignore the final judgment of the wicked and godless (Romans 6:23).\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003ch2\u003eThe Abundant Life Is Available\u003c\/h2\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eJesus says in John 16:24, “Hitherto have ye asked nothing in my name: ask, and ye shall receive, that your joy may be full.” The joy that Jesus gives is not easily removed from a Christian’s heart.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eAt times we are heavy hearted because of temptations. But the joy from the Holy Spirit’s presence runs deeper. It may not be the bubbling, light feeling all the time but simply a calm trust in the Lord that allows us to stand unwavering in trial and unconquered by the storm.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eSome may tell you that the Christian way is too restrictive to be enjoyed. They might think that in order to be happy you must be able to do as you please. Just try the Lord! You will find it is a pleasure to serve the One who died for you. It will become clear to you that the person who serves himself is really the one in bondage and the servant of Christ is the free man.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eTrue fulfillment is not found in following trends and fashions or patterning our lives to impress others. That kind of living becomes a compulsive force in us and leads to bondage. When we are humble we are free. Free to be ourselves. Free to rest our minds from worrying about what others are thinking of us.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003ch2\u003eJesus Offers Life Worth Living\u003c\/h2\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eIn Matthew 11:28 we read, “Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.” Here Jesus offers rest to all whose load seems more than they can carry, whose life lacks purpose, whose life is unfulfilled.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eCome to the Lord and give Him your load of sin, your dissatisfaction, your unfulfilled emptiness, and your frustration. Admit your inability to handle life’s problems. Turn from what you know to be wrong in your life. Give your life over to Jesus. Trust Him to take you by the hand and lead you.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eOnce you realize you need help in your life, you can come to Jesus and receive that help. As long as you feel independent and self-sufficient, He can do nothing for you. When you yield yourself to his care, there is hope for you.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eJesus Christ can fill the deepest longing of your soul. Yield your life and will to Him. Many soldiers have been severely injured, and many lives have needlessly been cut short because of the selfish goals of certain leaders. This has caused severe anguish of heart for the loved ones of those that have perished. Defeat has also caused much heartache and sadness for those unsuccessful leaders.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003ch2\u003eThe Spiritual Battle\u003c\/h2\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eEvery responsible soul encounters great spiritual battles in life. The consequences of these battles are of tremendous weight and importance. The loss of a physical battle can bring disgrace to a leader during his life. The loss of the battle of your soul will bring anguish for eternity. Have you thought of the inevitable consequences of a self-centered Christless life?\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eAre you going to lose the battle of life? The battle between life and death? The battle between heaven and hell? The battle between self-denial and self-love, your soul and the world? Jesus says, “What shall it profit a man, if he shall gain the whole world, and lose his own soul?” (Mark 8:36).\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eWhether we have much or little of this natural world in our possession, if we lose our own soul, what a tragedy! Our eternal destiny will be sealed. Many people do not realize that there is a great spiritual battle to be fought. Their understanding has been blinded by Satan and the world, and they are asleep to the realities of the battle against sin. The Bible says, “Awake thou that sleepest, and arise from the dead, and Christ shall give thee light” (Ephesians 5:14). Shake off the chains of sin and Satan. Make it a fight to the finish! You cannot escape natural death, but you can escape eternal death. If you lose the battle for your soul’s salvation, it will be an eternal doom in hell and torment.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003ch2\u003eThe Choice\u003c\/h2\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eDid you ever stop to consider that there is but one step between you and death? Are you ready to pass over the threshold of time into eternity? To gain the victory that will lead you to your heavenly home, you must come to Jesus. “God... now commandeth all men every where to repent” (Acts 17:30). NOW! Not tomorrow or some other convenient season. “Now is the accepted time; behold, now is the day of salvation” (2 Corinthians 6:2). If you are yet without Christ in your heart, if your past condemns you, if you have not experienced the new birth (John 3:3), do not rest at ease. Repent! Come to Jesus just as you are while He stands knocking at the door of your heart. He said, “If any man hear my voice, and open the door, I will come in to him” (Revelation 3:20). You may ask, “Can a sinner really be saved?” Yes! Come to Christ in faith with your whole heart and accept Him as your personal Savior, repenting of your sins and obeying the voice of the Holy Spirit. Then you will win the battle of your soul. You will not only enjoy peace and joy in this life, but also bliss and glory with your Savior in eternity. Thousands of years ago the prophet Ezekiel said, “If the wicked will turn from all his sins that he hath committed... and do that which is lawful and right, he shall surely live” (Ezekiel 18:21).\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eIf you intend to enjoy the pleasures of a sinful world, you will find yourself losing out in the end just as many power-hungry leaders have throughout history. You will be as a drowning man without a Savior, and you will perish. Grasp hold of Jesus Christ, the great Life Preserver, without delay. He will save you. Then, concerning the last battle, you will say with the apostle Paul, “Thanks be to God, which giveth us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ” (1 Corinthians 15:57).\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe apostle Paul writes about this battle of the soul being a good fight. He says, “Fight the good fight of faith, lay hold on eternal life” (1 Timothy 6:12). God is very interested in this fight of faith and delights in rewarding faith in Him. His love and compassion reached out to everyone, including the outcasts of society. He healed the sick, comforted the distressed, and preached salvation. Many received his teachings and followed Him. The religious leaders felt threatened by his message of love and humility, and plotted to kill Him. He was betrayed, arrested, and sentenced to die. As the angry mob followed, Roman soldiers took Jesus up the hill of Golgotha and nailed Him to a wooden cross between two thieves.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eJesus was crucified at nine o’clock in the morning. At noon the sky darkened for three hours. Afterward, Jesus cried with a loud voice, “It is finished,” and gave up his life. There was a mighty earthquake that split the rocks and opened many graves.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eJesus’s disciples took his body down from the cross. They lovingly placed it in a new tomb and closed the entrance with a large stone. Early in the morning of the third day there was a great earthquake. An angel came down from heaven and rolled the stone away from the tomb. Some women who loved Him came to anoint his body, and they were surprised to find the tomb empty. They were met by angels who told them, “He is not here, but is risen: remember how he spake unto you when he was yet in Galilee, Saying, The Son of man must be delivered into the hands of sinful men, and be crucified, and the third day rise again. And they remembered his words” (Luke 24:6-8).\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eFollowing his resurrection Jesus met his disciples in an upper room. He showed them the wounds in his hands and his side and blessed them with the peace of God. He spent forty days teaching and speaking of the things pertaining to the kingdom of God. With his death and resurrection, the plan of salvation was completed.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eOne day while speaking with his disciples, Jesus told them to wait at Jerusalem until they received the power of the Holy Spirit. This would enable them to witness for Him wherever they went. When He finished speaking, He lifted up his hands, blessed them, and ascended into heaven. As the disciples watched Him ascend, two men in white clothing appeared and said, “Ye men of Galilee, why stand ye gazing up into heaven? this same Jesus, which is taken up from you into heaven, shall so come in like manner as ye have seen him go into heaven” (Acts 1:11).\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eSo when the people of Samaria heard Jesus’s message, they believed on Him. They told the woman, “Now we believe, not because of what you said, but because we have heard Him ourselves and know that He really is the Christ.” The gospel of Jesus Christ, which is his teachings, death, and resurrection, is the power of God unto salvation. To experience salvation, come to Jesus, repent, and forsake sin. Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ as your personal Savior and commit your life to Him. Then through the power of the Holy Spirit you can love and forgive all people, even your enemies. As Christians continue in faithful obedience, Jesus gives power to live victoriously over sin.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eJesus is now in heaven interceding for mankind and preparing a place for the faithful (John 14:2-3). Someday soon He will return to judge the world. The apostle John wrote about that day. “And I saw a great white throne, and him that sat on it... And I saw the dead, small and great, stand before God; and the books were opened... and the dead were judged out of those things which were written in the books” (Revelation 20:11-12). God will separate the faithful followers of Jesus Christ from those who lived in selfish unbelief. He will receive all the faithful into the heavenly mansions He has prepared.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eDo you know the One who knows everything about you? In five days God created the sun, moon, stars, earth, water, birds, and fish. On the sixth day God created all the creatures of the land, and then created man in his own image. Man is the crown of God’s creation and an expression of his love. God created Adam, the first man, pure and without sin. God wanted man to serve Him by personal choice. He gave Adam and his wife Eve one simple commandment, but they chose to disobey. Because of their sin, they were separated from God. Their disobedience caused everyone to fall under the curse of sin and death. God was the only one who could redeem mankind. To the person born of the Holy Spirit of God, heaven is close and real. He experiences a foretaste of his eternal home.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe virtues exemplified by Christ—truth, humility, purity, and love—are precious to the child of God. As God graces the believer’s life with love from heaven, he is careful to be honest and humble. We often encounter things we do not understand. We attempt to look into the future, but are not able to do so. Disappointments are often experienced in our lives. All of this could be described as darkness.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eHeaven has only light. It is where God dwells. “God is light, and in him is no darkness at all” (1 John 1:5). In his light is perfect understanding. Knowledge will be complete. The past and all events will be totally clear. In this light, there will be full fellowship between the Father and all those who reside with Him.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eHeaven is described as “the inheritance of the saints in light” (Colossians 1:12). Attributes of light listed in the scriptures are knowledge, holiness, and joy. This light is without interruption—forever! There shall be no night there (Revelation 21:25).\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003ch2\u003eHeaven—A Place without Threat or Sin\u003c\/h2\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e“And there shall in no wise enter into it any thing that defileth, neither whatsoever worketh abomination, or maketh a lie” (Revelation 21:27). Discouragement, disappointment, temptation, and sin are part of the earthly life. Others’ joys and sorrows touch our emotions. Family ties are meaningful and separation is painful. Mortality will give way to immortality. “So when this corruptible shall have put on incorruption, and this mortal shall have put on immortality, then shall be brought to pass the saying that is written, Death is swallowed up in victory” (1 Corinthians 15:54). This great and innumerable throng, pardoned from sin and sanctified by the blood of Jesus Christ, will inhabit heaven (Revelation 7:9-14).\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThese souls who have been redeemed in this life will be glorified in heaven. How wonderful it will be to experience the marriage of his church with the Lamb of God. This will be glory beyond compare. Our minds understand the things which we can see and feel. While we understand that heaven is the abode of the soul with God, He has chosen not to reveal all the aspects of that eternal home.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eStephen, the first Christian martyr, was given a glimpse of heaven. As he was being stoned for his faith, he “looked up stedfastly into heaven, and saw the glory of God, and Jesus standing on the right hand of God” (Acts 7:55).\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eEven though much about heaven cannot be explained, we know enough that we, like faithful people through the ages, desire to dwell eternally in the city that God has made. Through the fall of man in the beginning, man has forfeited (lost) his favor with God. Repenting of our sins and finding forgiveness through the blood of Jesus Christ can restore this relationship. The peace that we experience is a foretaste of the fullness of rest that will be ours in that eternal abode. The pit of doom and unending fire awaiting those who in this lifetime reject the redeeming love of Jesus. In these Holy Scriptures it is prophesied that before that notable Day of Judgment there will be clear and pronounced signs.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eBefore his coming there shall be wars and rumors of wars, distress and perplexity of nations. Nations will be fighting each other and will seem to find no way of settling their differences of attitudes and opinions.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThere shall be earthquakes and pestilences in various places. The Bible tells us that evil men will wax worse and worse. At the same time people will not heed the warning but be lovers of pleasure more than lovers of God. Are we not witnessing the fulfillment of these prophecies in our day? When the shepherd heard the howls of the wolves in the distance, he knew his sheep was in great danger. He urgently set off in that direction. He continued to run until he was weak and exhausted. He did not realize the cruel wolves were chasing him into a trap. Night fell upon a dreadful scene. The sheep was caught by thorns near the edge of the cliff. He was bleeding, exhausted, and surrounded by wolves. He struggled pitifully, but he could not save himself. It seemed he had reached his end. Fearlessly he faced the wolves and drove them away. He went to his crying sheep and gently pulled him out of the thorns and away from the edge of the cliff. He bathed his wounds and applied healing ointment. Then he took him in his arms and tenderly carried him home. The lost sheep had been found. “So will I seek out my sheep, and will deliver them” (Ezekiel 34:12).\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp align=\"justify\"\u003eWe are all like the lost sheep. Jesus, the Good Shepherd, loves us and has a safe place for us. There is also an enemy that wants to destroy our soul. Satan tempts us with many enticing things, promising security and good times. In the end, his promises leave us empty. The happiness and fulfillment that Satan offers is false and elusive. We become frustrated and afraid; we are injured and torn. We wander blindly and cannot escape.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp align=\"justify\"\u003eThankfully, Jesus has provided a way of escape. He is still seeking those who have been lured away by Satan and are trapped by his devices. “For the Son of man [Jesus] is come to seek and to save that which was lost” (Luke 19:10).\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eJesus says in Matthew 11:28, “Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.” We need to pray to Jesus, acknowledging our sin and asking for forgiveness. We then commit our lives totally to Him, leaving our sinful ways. Jesus died for us and paid for our sins with his blood so we can be clean and free before God. So if God takes care of the birds and flowers, He will certainly take care of all boys and girls. He is a loving God who wants to help all those who are in need. In your troubles, or sickness, or sorrow, He will help you. The younger son said, “Give me my share of the money.” He took it and went far away from home. He and his friends wasted the money, having a good time. Soon it was all spent. Then his friends left him alone.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eA man gave him work feeding pigs, but he did not have anything to eat. He was so hungry!\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eHe thought, “My father’s servants have much to eat. I will go home, and I will say to my father, ‘I have sinned. I can no longer be like a son. May I work for you as a servant?’” and the younger son started for home.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe father was watching and waiting for his son. How he missed him! He met robbers in the way. They jumped on him and hurt him. They took his clothes and his money. Then they ran away. The man was badly hurt. He hurried by on the other side of the road.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eA Levite came down the road. He also saw the man who was hurt and stopped to look at him, but he did not help him either. He walked by on the other side, too.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eA Samaritan came riding down the road on his donkey. When he saw the man who was hurt, he stopped to see if he could help him. He washed his cuts with oil and wrapped them up. He put the man on his donkey and took him to the nearest inn.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eIn the morning the good Samaritan said to the innkeeper, “Take care of the man until he is well. Here is money to pay you. But this message we all share: “For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God” (Romans 3:23). And listen further, “There is none righteous, no, not one” (Romans 3:10). God spoke through his prophet Isaiah and said, “All we like sheep have gone astray; we have turned every one to his own way” (Isaiah 53:6). Do you notice the central thought of these scriptures? “All have strayed.” “None righteous.” “All have sinned.” Wouldn’t this also include you? Your soul, your life belongs to God. The man or woman who does not recognize God as the master of his life lives in disobedience and sin. “The soul that sinneth, it shall die” (Ezekiel 18:4).\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003ch2\u003eSin Separates\u003c\/h2\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eYour sins have separated you from God. You feel a longing inside that you can’t explain. You may feel forsaken and that God doesn’t hear. The reason is pointed out by God: “Behold, the Lord’s hand is not shortened, that it cannot save; neither his ear heavy, that it cannot hear: But your iniquities \\[sins\\] have separated between you and your God, and your sins have hid his face from you, that he will not hear” (Isaiah 59:1-2). Again, “The wages of sin is death” (Romans 6:23). As you think of your life and your sins, think also about God. God is without sin; therefore He is holy, righteous, and just. God says sin must be judged: “For God shall bring every work into judgment, with every secret thing, whether it be good, or whether it be evil” (Ecclesiastes 12:14). There is a great gulf between you and God. Unless you find the way which spans that gulf between a holy God and sinful man, you shall die an eternal death! (Luke 16:26) But listen, there is a way—there is hope for you!\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003ch2\u003eJesus Opens the Door\u003c\/h2\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eWhile it is true God has decreed a judgment of death upon sin, He is also a God of love. “God is love” (1 John 4:16). God loves you even if you are living in sin. His love has made a way for you to be saved (John 3:16). God will carry out his judgment on sin, and if this justice would be meted out to man, he would instantly die. Therefore God, not willing that any should perish, sent his son Jesus to take the penalty of our sins that we may live. The Bible says, “Behold therefore the goodness and severity of God” (Romans 11:22). The goodness of God desires to save man but his judgment demands sentence.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eJesus came to this world for the express purpose of redeeming our souls. He was holy, without sin, the spotless Lamb of God. God’s love for us was proven when He took our sins and guilt and put them upon Jesus. Behold his goodness! Jesus was now made sin in our place, and to satisfy the judgment of God, He was crucified on a cross. He endured the pain and agony, and then died. Our sins were paid. Peter’s message was right to the point: “Him \\[Jesus\\]… ye have taken, and by wicked hands have crucified and slain” (Acts 2:23). Will you look to Jesus, the One who was crucified, and acknowledge your sin?\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eBy the power of the Spirit of God you will realize that you are helplessly lost. As this realization weighs on your heart, it will bring a burden and regret for sin. In despair, you will cry out, “God be merciful to me a sinner” (Luke 18:13). As God hears your honest plea, He will save you. Your burden will be gone and you will be born again. As you continue to follow, you will turn away from your former ways of sin to heavenly things. This is the work of repentance as it is wrought by God in the heart of all those who will come to Him. Often there were many more cards than I expected. Could it be possible that I had the time in my twenty years to write each of these thousands, possibly millions, of cards? But each card confirmed this truth. Each was written in my own handwriting. Each signed with my signature.\u003c\/em\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cem\u003eWhen I pulled out the file marked “Songs I Have Listened To,” I realized the files grew to contain their contents. The cards were packed tightly, and yet after two or three yards, I hadn’t found the end of the file. I shut it, shamed, not so much by the quality of music, but more by the vast amount of time I knew that file represented.\u003c\/em\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cem\u003eWhen I came to a file marked “Lustful Thoughts” I felt a chill run through my body. I pulled the file out only an inch, not willing to test its size, and drew out a card. I shuddered at its detailed contents. I felt sick to think that such a moment had been recorded.\u003c\/em\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cem\u003eSuddenly I felt an almost animal rage. One thought dominated my mind: “No one must ever see these cards! I have to destroy them!” In an insane frenzy I yanked the file out. Its size didn’t matter now. I had to empty it and burn the cards. But as I took the file at one end and began pounding it on the floor, I could not dislodge a single card. I became desperate and pulled out a card, only to find it as strong as steel when I tried to tear it.\u003c\/em\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cem\u003eDefeated and utterly helpless, I returned the file to its slot. Leaning my forehead against the wall, I let out a long, self-pitying sigh. And then I saw it. The title bore “People I Have Shared the Gospel With.” The handle was brighter than those around it, newer, almost unused. I pulled on its handle and a small box not more than three inches long fell into my hands. I could count the cards it contained on one hand.\u003c\/em\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cem\u003eAnd then the tears came. I began to weep. Sobs, so deep that they hurt, started in my stomach and shook through me. I fell on my knees and cried. I cried out of shame, from the overwhelming shame of it all. The rows of file shelves swirled in my tear-filled eyes. No one must ever, ever know of this room. I must lock it up and hide the key.\u003c\/em\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cem\u003eBut then as I pushed away the tears, I saw Him. No, please not Him. Not here. And in the moments I could bring myself to look at His face, I saw a sorrow deeper than my own. He seemed to intuitively go to the worst boxes. Why did He have to read every one?\u003c\/em\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cem\u003eFinally He turned and looked at me from across the room. He looked at me with pity in His eyes. But this was a pity that didn’t anger me. I dropped my head, covered my face with my hands and began to cry again. He walked over and put His arm around me. He could have said so many things. But He didn’t say a word. He just cried with me.\u003c\/em\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cem\u003eThen He got up and walked back to the wall of files. Starting at one end of the room, He took out a file and, one by one, began to sign His name over mine on each card.\u003c\/em\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cem\u003e“No!” I shouted, rushing to Him. All I could find to say was “No, no,” as I pulled the card from Him. His name shouldn’t be on these cards. But here it was, written in red so rich, so dark, so alive. The name of Jesus covered mine. I don’t think I’ll ever understand how He did it so quickly, but the next instant it seemed I heard Him close the last file and walk back to my side. He carelessly wasted his money in selfish living. He thought he was having a very good time until suddenly his money ran out and his friends left him. He was all alone and needy. We are created with living souls that long to be in harmony with our Creator. “As the hart panteth after the water brooks, so panteth my soul after thee, O God. My soul thirsteth for God, for the living God” (Psalm 42:1-2). Only the living God will satisfy the living soul of man!\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe psalmist David summed up his innermost feeling by saying, “I shall not want” (Psalm 23:1). God satisfied his need. David was contented because he knew the peace that comes only when creature and Creator have met. “For he satisfieth the longing soul, and filleth the hungry soul with goodness” (Psalm 107:9).\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eGod is real. Even though you don’t see, understand, or find Him, this does not alter the fact that He was, now is, and always will be. There is a God! Never doubt it. Believe firmly in his existence and have confidence that He loves you.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003ch2\u003eGod is everywhere!\u003c\/h2\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eJesus told the woman at Jacob’s well that God is a Spirit and can be found any place, anywhere, and any time. He does not confine Himself to a remote, out-of-reach heaven; nor does He limit Himself to places of worship. You can find Him on the mountain, in the valley, in the sky, on the sea, in your home, or any other place. At this very moment He surrounds you.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eJacob, a man of God, said, “Surely the Lord is in this place; and I knew it not” (Genesis 28:16). Often, we too, are so engrossed with the earthly things of life that even though He is near us, we “know it not.” We are expecting some dramatic encounter with Him and fail to recognize Him in the still small voice within (1 Kings 19:9-13). We must stop, look, and listen; and then in faith we will see, hear, and understand.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eYou don’t need to grope around in the dark looking for God. He is not hiding from you; He is waiting for you. Long before you started out on your search to find Him, He was waiting for you to seek Him. He wants you in his eternal family where He can love and care for you in a very personal way. Do you feel empty, restless, guilty, lost, or afraid to die? This is God calling you because He does not want you to be lost. This may be your first call or your final one. “To day if ye will hear his voice, harden not your heart” (Psalm 95:7-8).\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eAll have sinned. “There is none righteous, no, not one” (Romans 3:10). Since God is holy, He hates sin. As we come into God’s presence, we are moved to deal with our sins in the way He has taught us in his Word. Living a good moral life will never atone for our sins or be sufficient for our salvation. True repentance will turn us from our sins.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eIn his great love, God made a way for us to find Him. “For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life” (John 3:16). Christ is the way to God! Jesus said, “I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me” (John 14:6). When the jailer asked, “What must I do to be saved?” the apostle Paul answered, “Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ, and thou shalt be saved” (Acts 16:30-31).\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eWhen Nicodemus inquired of the way of salvation, Jesus told him, “Except a man be born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God” (John 3:3). Like Nicodemus, do you ask how this can be? To be born again is to receive Jesus, the Son of God, as your Savior. As you feel God’s tender love, you will feel sinful and unclean before Him. Jesus’s loving sacrifice for your sins causes a deep sorrow in your heart. “If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness” (1 John 1:9).\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eAs you believe, you are able to surrender your will to God in a full commitment. You receive a new heart, and God’s Holy Spirit leads you to deny yourself and turn away from sin. The choice is yours—and yours alone. You have nothing to lose, and all to gain. If you will stop, turn your face, and move toward God, you will find Him. A seeking soul and a seeking Savior always meet! When you find God, the source of life, He will give you a new life, a new heart, and a will to follow Him. When you are frustrated and discouraged or happy and thankful, express yourself to God. It is important to be honest in prayer. God wants to hear how we really feel down deep inside.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eListen to what God may have to tell you. He speaks to us by giving impressions and thoughts. These may come while we are praying. Even the words that we pray can be the result of impressions given by God. God wants to communicate his will to us. He may do this during prayer or afterward. He speaks through his Spirit, through the Bible, and through his servants.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eWhen we pray, we need to shut out the distractions of the world around us and concentrate on our communion with God. While we can pray in any place and in any position, we need a quiet place if possible. As we close our eyes and kneel in reverence to God, we are better able to meditate. Our attention needs to be focused on God (Matthew 6:6).\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eSome people say, “But I do not know what words to use or how to express myself to God.” It may be that we say this because we imagine that we need to use a different vocabulary so God will hear us. We may think that we must use many words and speak in a beautiful and elegant manner in order to get his attention. In reality, the Bible gives us various examples of prayer which are very short and simple, and God respected them. For example, a certain man who was a sinner prayed, “God be merciful to me a sinner” (Luke 18:13). Another sinner, broken and contrite, prayed, “Lord, remember me when thou comest into thy kingdom” (Luke 23:42). God does not require a special form of speech for prayer. The Bible contains many prayers of men from various backgrounds with no two prayers being alike.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eFor our prayers to be effective, we must come in humility before the Lord. In 2 Chronicles 7:14 we read, “If my people, which are called by my name, shall humble themselves, and pray, and seek my face, and turn from their wicked ways; then will I hear from heaven, and will forgive their sin, and will heal their land.” To become better acquainted with the Lord, we must respond to the directions we receive—especially in regard to turning away from sin.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eAs we communicate daily with the Lord, He gives us vision, stabilizes our lives, and grants our petitions. “If ye abide in me, and my words abide in you, ye shall ask what ye will, and it shall be done unto you” (John 15:7).\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003ePray in the name of Jesus. He said, “Whatsoever ye shall ask in my name, that will I do” (John 14:13). We have no merit of our own; we can only come to God in prayer through Jesus Christ.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003ePray often. Listen for and to his voice when He speaks. Life wasn’t supposed to be this way. Where is the little butterfly with the beautiful wings? What happened to the flowers? Was I truly happy? What about my soul? Do you remember when you landed that good job? The pay was terrific, but did it do for you what you thought it would? (1 Timothy 6:9). I tried to tell you that contentment comes only from me. For a while you did consider taking my way, but it seemed too hard so you followed your own way. Oh, if only you would have come to me, I would have given you what you were searching for—peace in your heart, peace in your home, and confidence about the future” (Matthew 11:28).\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eGod continued, “You were so busy. I tried talking to you on those cool beautiful evenings, but you didn’t hear. I tried to get your attention during the storms. I thought you might be listening, but you weren’t. What does it mean? It means being away from God—forever—in a place of torment prepared for the devil and his angels (Matthew 13:41-42). But you can change this. If you know things are not right with your life, admit it. Turn to God, repent of your sin, and surrender your will to Him (Acts 2:37-38). God loves you, and wants to forgive you (John 3:16). The price has already been paid (Romans 5:8-11). Jesus died on the cross in your place. He paid the ransom so you could be saved. If he humbles himself and through faith in Jesus cries out to God with all his heart, then God will forgive him. “Repent ye therefore, and be converted, that your sins may be blotted out” (Acts 3:19). Repenting of sins includes being sorry for them, forsaking them, and turning to a new way of life. When this happens, the Holy Spirit enters the heart and one is born again. “Therefore if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature: old things are passed away; behold, all things are become new” (2 Corinthians 5:17).\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003ch2\u003eWho Needs This New Birth?\u003c\/h2\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e“For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God” (Romans 3:23). Inspired by the Holy Spirit, the prophet Isaiah foretold the suffering of our Lord Jesus for the sins of mankind. He said, “All we like sheep have gone astray; we have turned every one to his own way” (Isaiah 53:6). Jesus clearly told Nicodemus, a seeker of the truth, that one cannot see the kingdom of God unless he is born again. This spiritual birth is the work of the Holy Spirit. All who want to be saved need to experience this birth.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eAll who are weary and tired of their burden of sin are invited to come to Jesus and find forgiveness. Jesus invites: “Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you, and learn of me; for I am meek and lowly in heart: and ye shall find rest unto your souls. For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light” (Matthew 11:28-30). Jesus suffered, shed his blood, and died on the cross “for our sins: and not for ours only, but for the sins of the whole world” (1 John 2:2).\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003ch2\u003eRepentance\u003c\/h2\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eRepentance, confession, and restitution are all part of coming to the Lord Jesus with all our heart, soul, mind, and strength. “He that covereth his sins shall not prosper: but whoso confesseth and forsaketh them shall have mercy” (Proverbs 28:13). “If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness” (1 John 1:9). If we have wronged our fellow man, we should confess and acknowledge our sins, and make restitution where needed. “And Zacchaeus stood, and said unto the Lord: Behold, Lord, the half of my goods I give to the poor; and if I have taken any thing from any man by false accusation, I restore him fourfold” (Luke 19:8).\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003ch2\u003eFaith and Obedience\u003c\/h2\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eOnce we have experienced the new birth, we endeavor to live faithful Christian lives. Jesus instructs his followers; “If any man will come after me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross, and follow me” (Matthew 16:24). We are also admonished to keep ourselves unspotted from the world (James 1:27). “Love not the world, neither the things that are in the world. If any man love the world, the love of the Father is not in him. For all that is in the world, the lust of the flesh, and the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life, is not of the Father, but is of the world” (1 John 2:15-16).\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe Christian will be able to accomplish this by following the leading of the Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit will give direction and the strength to live a godly life. “Howbeit when he, the Spirit of truth, is come, he will guide you into all truth” (John 16:13). The results of this effort will bring about a changed heart; a life of faith that will produce obedience. “By works was faith made perfect” (James 2:22). The Christian is now living for Jesus instead of living for himself.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe indwelling presence of the Holy Spirit inspires a deep love in the Christian’s heart. He will seek the fellowship of other born-again Christians. The unity of this fellowship encourages an open-hearted sharing with one another. This is a support to the Christian and helps him to grow spiritually.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eWhen we are born again, our names are written in the book of life. “And whosoever was not found written in the book of life was cast into the lake of fire” (Revelation 20:15). Our sins are forgiven, and we experience joy and peace in our hearts. No, we cannot be what we are not: “Because the carnal mind is enmity against God: for it is not subject to the law of God, neither indeed can be” (Romans 8:7). We must have a change of heart. For God by the prophet says, “A new heart also will I give you” (Ezekiel 36:26).\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e“Then what is the new birth?” The new birth consists of a change of the heart from a life of serving self to one of serving the Lord. This comes when we feel remorse for our sinfulness and in faith look to Jesus for forgiveness. When a child is born, a new life comes forth, a new person in the flesh. So likewise, when we are born again, a new life in Christ Jesus after the Spirit comes forth. Therefore, it is called a birth—a new life in Christ Jesus. “The Lord is not slack concerning his promise, as some men count slackness; but is longsuffering to us-ward, not willing that any should perish, but that all should come to repentance” (2 Peter 3:9).\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e“When may I expect to be born again?” The Scripture says, “To day if ye will hear his voice” (Hebrews 3:7). That means at any age, time, or place, if you hear the call and respond, you can be born again by the Spirit.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e“How long will it take? Must I not grow into the new birth?” No, we are born into the kingdom of God and that makes us children and heirs. “And if children, then heirs; heirs of God, and joint-heirs with Christ” (Romans 8:17). This may take place the moment you surrender all and come to Jesus for pardon.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e“How and when do we receive it?” God, who looks on the heart, sees your sincerity. He comes to you through the power of the Holy Ghost and creates within you a right spirit (Psalm 51:10). Thus, you are born again—a new creature in Christ Jesus by faith in Him (2 Corinthians 5:17).\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eFinally: “How may I know that I am born again?” Paul in Romans 8:1-10 teaches; “Now if any man have not the Spirit of Christ, he is none of his.” The Bible teaches that the lost are dead in sin, condemned, and have an evil conscience. They are carnally minded, without hope, disobedient, and without God in the world. But a born-again Christian is a child of God, alive in Christ, saved, without condemnation, and has a good conscience. He is also spiritually minded, filled with the Holy Ghost and faith, and has a hope of everlasting life. His sins are blotted out by the blood of Jesus. His heart is filled with love and the peace of God which passes understanding. He loves, desires, and has the power to do the Lord’s will. He cherishes a hope beyond the grave and the promise of a home in heaven. Could anyone go through such a change and not realize it? Hardly, for “the Spirit itself beareth witness with our spirit, that we are the children of God” (Romans 8:16).\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eIf you have not had this experience with the peace and joy it brings to the soul, do not rest, for you are trifling with God and your own soul.
