Light, Medium, Dark — What Your Roast Says About Your Caffeine

Light, Medium, Dark — What Your Roast Says About Your Caffeine

There's a common myth floating around the coffee world: the darker the roast, the stronger the kick. But the truth might surprise you — and it all comes down to what happens inside the bean during the roast.

The Science of the Roast

When green coffee beans are roasted, heat breaks down compounds inside the bean — including caffeine. The longer a bean roasts, the more caffeine is burned off. So by the time you reach a dark roast, you've actually lost a small but measurable amount of caffeine compared to a light roast.

Light Roast — More Than You Think

Light roasts are roasted for a shorter time at lower temperatures. The result? A brighter, more acidic cup with complex fruity or floral notes — and slightly more caffeine per bean. If you're chasing that morning boost, a light roast might be your best ally.

Medium Roast — The Sweet Spot

Medium roasts strike a balance between the origin flavors of the bean and the caramelized, chocolatey notes that come from longer roasting. Caffeine levels sit right in the middle — and for most coffee drinkers, this is the everyday go-to.

Dark Roast — Bold Flavor, Slightly Less Caffeine

Dark roasts have that rich, smoky, full-bodied character that many people associate with "strong" coffee. And while the flavor is intense, the caffeine content is actually the lowest of the three. The boldness comes from the roast, not the caffeine.

One More Variable: The Scoop

Here's where it gets interesting — if you measure your coffee by weight, a dark roast bean is lighter (more moisture has been roasted out), so you'll use more beans per scoop, which can actually bring the caffeine back up. If you measure by volume, light roast wins on caffeine. Either way, the difference is relatively small.
